Valentine’s Day Quiz.

Because love is in the air and because I really love doing these things it’s time for another pop quiz. But first a quick word about romance novels: I found many of the titles on the Romance Writers Of America website, an organization that promotes and supports local libraries everywhere, and that is no joke. And neither are the titles.

Now without further ado, since it’s all much ado about nothing anyway, here’s your pop quiz. Winners will have the satisfaction of knowing they spend too much time on the internet.

My love for this post is in the air, Chris. You left us hanging in the air by listing #21 twice and not listing #23 in the answer key. #23 has to be clickbait and, yes, I spend too much time on the internet.

It would seem that I don’t spend enough time on the internet since I completely missed that.

I missed one! I don’t know whether to be proud of myself or embarrassed.

Be proud. Some people look down on romance novels but really there are worse things you could be reading–like clickbait articles.

At 68% this is the lowest score I’ve ever achieved on one of your quizzes. I also don’t know whether to be proud of myself or embarrassed.

It means you’ve avoided both clickbait and romance novels so interpret that as you will. Unless one of the ones you missed was the Norman Mailer novel. In that case be proud.

The best part is losers also have the satisfaction of knowing they spend too much time on the internet.

    Oh dear.
I think it’s time for humanity to go spend some time in the bomb shelter, not come out until it’s safe.

Sometimes I think so too but I can’t be completely down on romance novels. As long as people are still reading books, however trashy, I cling to the belief that there’s hope for us.

I think you could write a thesis on the shift in Romance Novels. Early on, it was all about woman meets man, members throb and quiver, the end. Now, increasingly there are pregnancies, small children, and lots and lots of daddy issues. It seems like it started in the late 90s. Now, sure, there’s still a whole line of faith-based Harlequins where there isn’t any sex, but if you spend any time perusing the stacks, the ones where she’s looking for a father for her twins is far outweighs the ones where she wants a man to fondle “the twins”.

It sounds like you’re already way ahead on this, although I think if I do a thesis it’s going to start with Forgive My Fins and the whole sub-genre of mermaid romance. Unlike vampires and werewolves that’s an area I feel hasn’t been exploited enough.
